The morning is crisp and with coffee round two on our minds we arrive at Kafe Louverture. We walk admiring the architecture of the brownstones, the small yards decorated for Halloween and the flowers in the windows. We walk a few blocks passing businesses not quite open. Right on time, Jack and Ben pop out of their room and we agree to walk and find a cappuccino as Tom still slumbers. I stand there already dreaming of visiting their other locations in D.C., Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. They purchased the Brooklyn home, and after renovation, Akwaaba Mansion opens in 1995. I love reading that this mansion was known as the ‘haunted house’ by the neighborhood kids, and I am impressed that they have built a small empire in a short amount of time. That is when I learn that this is Glenn and Monique’s first B&B, they own a total of five. I step in to look at the books, the games, and the framed articles.
#NO SLEEP TIL BROOKLYN TV#
The Mansion does not have TVs in the room but offers a TV room in the back. I grab a cup of coffee and head back upstairs. Morning is for exploring.Ĭoming down the stairs I see Glenn is setting up breakfast. It is a common habit when you enter a B&B to think every move you make is heard by all. We giggle with whispers at each other tip toeing through the mansion not wanting to wake anyone. Its midnight when arrive back at Akwaaba. Catching a quick view of the Statue of Liberty out in the Harbor, we wrap up our Manhattan evening. Jack speaks wise words as we make our way through Battery Park. “I realize we are walking through a dark park at night in Manhattan.” We end the meal with mini Irish Coffees and wiping tears of laughter form our eyes. We share stories over Irish dishes and sipping unique cocktails, which are ranked by their potency. Back at the Dead Rabbit we dine on the second floor. The doorman tells us there is a bit of a wait for table so we pop next door to the gin and cocktail bar Lovelace. Every time I come to Manhattan it is on my list to go whether it is for a pint, a meal, or the best Irish Coffee on this side of the Atlantic. Just Northeast of Battery Park sits a three story Irish gastropub, The Dead Rabbit. We are on the A-Train to Manhattan catching up on life and sharing our excitement to be in the Big Apple area. Its great having a go-to place in a city you love to visit. However, tonight we are choosing Manhattan. Glenn has several suggestions for dinner in the area. Tom arrives and the four of us get ourselves together for a late dinner. Special Touches in the Jumping the Broom Suite It is a Twi word, spoken by the Ahan group in Ghana. He embodies the meaning of Akwaaba, ‘welcome’. His friendly laid back demeanor makes me feel like I am home. He informs me that Jack and Ben have arrived and inquires about Tom’s arrival.
#NO SLEEP TIL BROOKLYN HOW TO#
His love for hospitality is authentically felt as he shows me how to enter the Inn, where to find coffee and water, the TV den, and ultimately to my room. We are all ready for a weekend of fun!Ĭheck in is a breeze as Glenn, our Innkeeper, greets me. The excitement mounts as we all arrive from different locations.īen and Jack drive in from Pennsylvania and arrive first, I am texting from my taxi as it makes it way from JFK airport, and Tom is grabbing an Uber from Manhattan as he wraps up two days of sales meetings. This is the opportunity to stay in a luxury tent on the grounds complete with a fire pit and the fixing for s’mores! As tempting as it is to try this, I passed knowing this group would be out exploring Brooklyn and Manhattan in the evenings. For instance, they offer in room massages, champagne and strawberries and a very unique glamping with s’mores. Upon booking I see all the add ons that Akwaaba offers. Meanwhile, Jack and Ben book the Ashante Suite. I book the Jumping the Broom Suitefor myself and Tom. Akwaaba Mansion Among the Brownstones in Bed-Stuy So, the welcoming Akwaaba Mansion Bed and Breakfast that sits among the brownstone lined streets of Brooklyn is the perfect choice. Secondly, another couple is coming to join us. This weekend trip was special as Tom and I are celebrating our wedding anniversary. However, while I plan a trip to the Big Apple, it proves to be the place to find a Bed and Breakfast. What I know about Brooklyn is very little. Just a short trip from Manhattan is the borough of Brooklyn.
